Biocides used in paints and coatings can be categorized into two main types:

• In-Can Preservatives: Prevent microbial contamination during storage.
  
  • Common Actives: Isothiazolinones (MIT, CMIT/MIT, BIT), Formaldehyde donors, Bronopol
• Dry-Film Preservatives: Protect the dried coating from fungal, algal, and bacterial growth.
  
  • Common Actives: Zinc pyrithione, IPBC (Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate), Diuron, Carbendazim

• CMIT/MIT + BIT – Broad-spectrum in-can protection
• BIT + Bronopol – Low-formaldehyde option for in-can protection
• IPBC + Zinc Pyrithione – Effective against fungi and algae for dry-film protection
